Hey Journal Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 13, 2025
Introduction
This Privacy Policy describes how Hey Journal ("we", "our", "us", or "the application") collects, uses, and handles your information when you use our mobile application. Hey Journal is designed to make journaling accessible through voice input.
Information We Collect
- Anonymous Authentication Data: We use Firebase Authentication for user sign-in. This process is designed to be anonymous and does not require personal identifiers like email or name.
- Journal Entries: Your journal entries created via typing are stored locally on your device.
- Voice Recordings & Transcripts: When you use the voice journaling feature:
- Audio is streamed in real-time to OpenAI's API for transcription.
- The resulting transcripts are processed to generate AI-powered journal entries and update the conversational agent's long-term memory. Transcripts themselves are not persistently stored by us after processing, unless logged for service improvement (see below).
- Subscription Data: If you subscribe to premium features, we use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions. RevenueCat collects necessary payment and subscription information. Please refer to RevenueCat's Privacy Policy for details on their data handling.
- Usage Data (Anonymous Logging): To improve Hey Journal, we may anonymously log transcripts and generated journal entries. This data is stripped of any potential identifiers and used solely for enhancing the application's performance, accuracy, and features.
How We Use Your Information
- To Provide Core Functionality: We use your voice input and transcripts to generate journal entries and enable the conversational features. Typed entries are used to update the agent's memory.
- To Manage Authentication: Firebase Authentication is used to provide a secure, anonymous way to access your journal data across sessions (though the data itself remains primarily on-device).
- To Process Subscriptions: RevenueCat handles all aspects of subscription management and payment processing.
- To Improve the Service: Anonymized transcripts and entries help us understand usage patterns and improve the AI models and overall user experience.
Data Storage
- Journal Entries: Stored locally on your device.
- Authentication Identifiers: Managed by Firebase Authentication.
- Subscription Status: Managed by RevenueCat.
- AI Memory: Processed information derived from your entries (to provide conversational context) is stored locally on your device.
Data Sharing
We do not sell your data. We share information only with the following third-party services as necessary to provide the application's functionality:
- OpenAI: Real-time audio data is sent for transcription. OpenAI's use of data is governed by their Privacy Policy.
- Firebase (Google): Handles anonymous authentication. Google's use of data is governed by their Privacy Policy.
- RevenueCat: Handles subscription management and payments. RevenueCat's use of data is governed by their Privacy Policy.
We may share anonymized, aggregated data for analytical purposes or service improvement.
User Rights & Data Control
- Journal Entries: Since entries are stored locally, you have direct control over them on your device.
- Account Deletion: You can typically manage your anonymous account through Firebase settings within the app (if applicable) or by contacting us.
- Subscription Management: Manage your subscriptions through the platform you used (e.g., App Store, Google Play).
Children's Privacy
Hey Journal is not intended for children under the age of 13 (or the relevant age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. We will notify you of significant changes by posting the new policy within the app or through other communication channels. The "Last updated" date indicates the latest revision.
